2 Who Invented it? Dr. James Naismith was born during 1861 in Ontario, Canada Became McGill University’s Athletic Director Introduced the game in 1891 at a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts First played with two peach baskets and a soccer ball

4 Why Did He Invent It? Needed a recreational sport that could be played indoors due to the weather in Massachusetts Wanted a sport that would develop skills Did not want another sport the depended exclusively on strength

6 The Rules of the Game The game is played with 5 players on the court for each team The object is to put the basketball in your own basket To advance the ball down the court, you must dribble if you are going to walk/run with the ball or pass the ball to a teammate

7 The Rules of the Game (cont.) The game is usually played with 4 quarters varying in length, except in college basketball the game is played in two halves.
