Violence Prevention By: Maggie Froelich & Mihir Patel Grades 2-4 Activity Duration :15 minutes

National Health Education Standards Standard 4: Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.

Indiana Health & PE Academic Standards 2.5.4 Demonstrate respect and compassion for students with individual differences. 3.5.4 Encourage classmates who demonstrate difficulty with skill performance.

Student Objectives Demonstrate an argument, and infer how you could have made the situation better. Experiment with positive language. Develop a list of what you think a bully is.

Materials Needed Take the Pledge Certificate Writing utensil Paper Students An enclosed room

Preparation Print out Take the Pledge certificates Think about possible scenarios involving violence Make a list of positive language

Introductory Activity Introduce both activities. You will be role playing situations where it could become violent, then we will determine how else it could have played out. Then we will be discussing what bullying is and then take a pledge

Closing Activity What is your take away? What are positive words we can use when there is a disagreement? What can you do if you see someone else being bullied? What does this pledge mean?

Assessment of Activities To assess the students understanding of violence prevention we will ask high level thinking questions. Listen to their conversations Listen to their questions

Success for All Accommodations You can print out an example situation if you have a set of students who cannot speak If a student cannot write their own name they may also fill the certificate out online

Safety Concerns A student may go to far in the role playing Must monitor the activity closely Monitor the language that is used
