A map scale represents the Earth’s surface drawn smaller than it really is. A map is drawn to scale. Scale means that a small distance on the map stands for a much larger distance on the Earth’s surface

1)Line Scale 1)Statement Scale 1cm : 50km 3) Representative Fraction 1: 5 000 000
4
Eg. 1cm : 50km This means that 1cm on the map stands for 50km on the Earth’s surface. Eg. On a map, if Ladner and Tsawwassen were 3cm apart and the statement scale was 1cm: 10km what would the actual distance be? Answer: 30km between Ladner and Tsawwassen

– this is a special kind of ruler to use with the map 50 100 150 200 250km It is still “every cm = 50km, but this time all you have to do is take a piece of paper, place the edge of the paper between the two places you are looking at, and make a mark for each space. Then take the paper and place it along the line scale (one place at 0km) and estimate the distance
6
0 50 100 150 200 250km Ladner Whistler If this were correct, then the distance between Ladner and Whistler would be about 225km
