7 Factors shaping how Singapore approaches challenges faced as an independent state Natural Constraints Singapore is small and surrounded by larger neighbours Easily affected by events in neighbouring countries Singapore needs to be sensitive to neighbours Singapore lacks completely in significant natural resources Dependent on neighbours for important resources Singapore needs to be very resourceful to overcome constraints in building on her strengths and overcoming her limitations Singapore has to be adaptable to the changes in S.E.A. and worldwide Road to Independence The Awakening: People in Singapore suffered hardships under Japanese rule (Year of) Strikes: People dissatisfied with British, felt they did not do enough to improve post-war conditions Communists: Convinced Chinese students and workers to create disorder to end British rule Limited Self-Governance: British did not believe Singapore could survive on her own with many constraints Becoming a State: New government was formed after election; Areas like Defence still under British Towards Merger: Malaya wanted to formed Malaysia with Singapore, Sabah and Sarawak Opposition to Merger: Indonesia and Philippines objected to federation, proposed that the current East Malaysia belonged to them Race Riots: Conflict between Malaysia and Singapore Independence: Malaysia thought Singapore and Federation could not cooperate anymore, they got separated

8 Challenges faced by Singapore as a newly-independent state Stable government and social needs Government need to gain support of people, which could be achieved if their needs were met Government need to give immediate attention to basic needs like education and healthcare after independence, such had to be met through sound policies Economic challenge Widespread unemployment and poverty in Singapore in 1960s Need to create enough jobs immediately Need to plan for economic development so that Singapore could continue to grow Sovereignty Singapore had to rely entirely on small population to defend itself to maintain independence When British announced troop-withdrawal, building up a defence force became even more urgent British withdrawal also meant a large number of workers would be put out of job Another way of maintaining independence was to gain recognition from other states in the world Social cohesion and national identity Tension remained among ethnic groups after Indonesian Confrontation and race riots Most of people in Singapore were immigrants and were loyal to their homeland Need to create a bond among people and develop national identity People must have confidence and belief that Singapore could survive as nation
