3 © Food – a fact of life 2012 When is harvest? A farmer sows wheat seeds. In spring they start to grow.

4 © Food – a fact of life 2012 When the seeds first grow they are green. The sun has not yet ripened the crop.

5 © Food – a fact of life 2012 In the autumn the wheat turns golden brown. The wheat is ready to be harvested.

6 © Food – a fact of life 2012 The grain is collected and taken to a store. The grain is milled and can be made into flour or breakfast cereals.

9 © Food – a fact of life 2012 The farmers need good soil to grow crops. The farm animals should have happy lives and all the things they need.

10 © Food – a fact of life 2012 In the UK, you can find the Red Tractor logo on lots of foods. It shows that: farms are checked to make sure that animals are well looked after; where our food comes from; the countryside is looked after; the food is safe to eat.
