“Joan Ekzarh” School of Humanities is one of the schools in the town of Shumen that has proved to be a school with traditions. It has been preserving and developing the good traditions and the modern values in the realm of Humanities for 10 years now.

TODAY 64 HIGHLY SKILLED TEACHERS ARE IN CHARGE OF 906 STUDENTS

Students from 8 th to 12 th grade study in specialized classes, where there is an increased number of periods in Humanities, Foreign languages and Computer literacy. All lessons are hold in modern classrooms. There are specialized classrooms for different school subjects (e.g. History, Europeistics, and etc.), as well as a cosy library.

The school is named after one of the most eminent Bulgarian medieval scholars of the 10 th century – Joan Exarch. His work, which concentrates in itself philosophy, theology and natural science, has turned into an encyclopedia for the medieval Christian. Our school’s feast is in his honour.

Our school is included in the ARION journal (a journal of the European Committee on Culture and Education). It is a centre of modern ideas and values. It has won many prizes in local and national competitions, contests and Olympiads.

One of the symbols of our school is its flag. It stands together with the Bulgarian national flag and the European flag.

The teachers in the school have business laptops and multimedia projectors. There is Internet connection in the whole school. There are excellent condition for using ICTs in the learning process.

Our school is one of the first schools in Bulgaria that works in the realm of Health and Sexual Education. 1 st project: Family and School – Partners in Building the Sexual Culture of the Rising Generation (2006-2007)

Students (grades 1 st – 11 th ), their parents and their teachers take part in the project. The classes are held in a specially designed Health Education laboratory.

The project “The Influence of Media on Students” is the first international project of our school. Our partner is “Montessori” College, Nijmegen, Holland. The participants in the project were familiarized with the work of the local media. They visited local newsrooms and editorial offices.

The students of our school (former and present) have gained many certificates and prizes from different competitions.
