1 First Nations Fishing By Melody

2 Fishing-Types Of Fish The main fish are halibut*, salmon*, herring, ling cod, smelt, sturgeon, and eulachon.The fish were preserved by smoking and drying them. The fathers caught them, the mothers prepared them, and the children helped prepare them.

3 WEIRS A fence built across a stream Salmon trapped against the fence
Fishermen spear and net the fish

4 Nets Twine made from cedar bark, nettle, and plants.
Reef nets went between two canoes. Dip nets had a long handle attached to them. Bag shaped nets went across the stream attached to a post.

5 Traps Made out of logs or rocks placed on the beach.
They used the tides to catch the fish.

6 Hooks Lures Rakes+Harpoons
Hooks were used to catch halibut. Spears and lures caught lingcod. Rakes were used for herring. Harpoons caught sturgeon. Spears were used to catch salmon.
