1
Document your sources of information. Show the foundation on which your work is built. You need two forms of documentation in your document: Parenthetical citation in the text. Reference list at end
2
In-Text Citations Put author and date in parentheses (APA style): One researcher has reported that air quality is declining in most U.S. cities (Turnbull 1998). Put citation as close as possible to quotation or cited information.
3
Citing work by more than one author: Two or three authors -- give all their names: (Hart and Kinnas 1998) (Hart, Kinnas, and Hardjanto 1998) More than three authors – first author’s name, followed by et al.: (Hart et al. 1998)
4
You also need a Reference List at end of Proposal. ABET (2005), “Criteria for Accrediting Engineering Programs,” Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology, ABET, Inc., Baltimore Md. American Psychological Association (2002). http://www.apa.org/ethics/homepage.html. Reprinted from December 2002 issue of the American Psychologist (Vol. 57, pp. 1060—1073). Accessed March 2006. Bransford, J. D., Brown, A., and Cocking, R.R., eds. (2000). How People Learn: Brain, Mind, Experience, and School. Washington, D.C. National Academy Press. Cleveland, W.S. (1994). The Elements of Graphing Data. Revised edition. Summit, NJ: Hobart Press.
5
Sources for how to reference print publications See section 68 on APA documentation in the Reference Guide for examples. Use the Citations and Bibliography section under the References tab – set the style to APA. Check the guidelines published by professional societies in your field: American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE): http://www.pubs.asce.org/authors/index.html (Manuscript Requirements)
6
Sources for how to reference online publications See section 68 in the Reference Guide (pp. 516-519). See also www.apastyle.orgwww.apastyle.org You will have to add items to References function in Word 2007, depending on the online source.
7
Two major types of online sources: those also in print : just put [Electronic version] after the title. those not (or different) in print: Add electronic pathway and date of access See RG, page 517.
8
Cite private correspondence and interviews (non-published sources) only in your text. APA standards do not allow non-published sources to be listed in a Reference List. In your sentence or in parentheses, indicate person, affiliation, form of source (interview, e.g.), and as detailed a date as possible. In an e-mail message, Dr. Richard Corsi stated that indoor air quality is “a pressing issue in this country” (University of Texas, March 23, 2009).
