Do’s and Don’ts of Cover Letters - I saw your ad on the information highway, and I came to a screeching halt.

Cover Letter A tool used to outline specific job qualifications that are not listed in your résumé May also be used to draw attention to a skill that you have in abundance which you feel is applicable to the job This letter accompanies a résumé and is used as an introduction from yourself to the potential employer

Jobs That Require It… You do not HAVE TO supply a cover letter for a job unless stated in the ad. You should consider whether it might be appropriate though. Because the letter is used to highlight skills that you have, you would use a letter in any situation where you feel it is necessary to elaborate your qualities. More common with advanced employment opportunities. Please disregard the attached résumé -- it is terribly out of date.

Introduction The first paragraph is used to identify 3 items to the prospective employer –The job for which you’re applying –Where you found the advertisement –Express interest/suitability You should also include that your résumé is attached I wonder what qualifications you need for this job.

2 nd Paragraph/Body Contains a minimum of 3 facts/skills that you would like to highlight about yourself Reinforces your appropriateness for the position May be divided into separate paragraphs if it does not flow nicely in one

1st Quality What is the 1 st quality? How will it benefit their organization and you in that job? This shows what you know about the job.

2nd Quality What is that second character trait you possess that will benefit them? How will it be beneficial? Again, shows the prospective employer that you know what to expect if and when you’re hired.

3rd Quality The power of 3 – try to include a minimum of three qualities but do not overload.

Concluding Paragraph States your contact information including: –Alternate contact numbers –Times you can be reached looking forward to hopefully getting the chance to meet in person to discuss possible employment and your suitability
