2 Bloom's Taxonomy

3 Remembering Candidates should be able to: Predict the properties of elements. Understanding Candidates should be able to: Use the information periodic table. Applying Candidates should be able to: A work sheet is provided. Analysing Compare the properties of same group elements. Evaluating Prediction of location of an element from its properties. Creating Arrange the elements in some new order of arrangement.

4 Topic 21 st Century Teaching Approach 21 st Century SkillsTechniques/Mod es Periodic table 1. Observing and monitoring skills 2. Giving direction skills 3. Listening and speaking 4. Questioning skills 5. Encouraging skills Creativity and intellectual curiosity Self direction Periodic table Word document

5 ANTICIPATED CHALLENGESSOLUTIONS Students might not be able to download recent past papers and mark scheme Computer lab of school will be used to assist students Difficulty in using different periodic tables Use of standard information periodic table

6 The Periodic Table Presented by Sohail Sultan

7 From very early times, chemists began to put the elements into groups according to similarities in their physical and chemical properties. The end result of these studies was our modern periodic table. History of Periodic table

8

9 The vertical columns of the periodic table are called GROUPS or FAMILIES. The elements of the same group have similar chemical properties! There are eight groups (i.e. I to VIII) with two sub-groups A and B. The group number indicates the number of valence electrons, which decide the chemical properties of the elements.

10 The horizontal rows of the periodic table are called PERIODS or SERIESES. There are seven periods (i.e. 1 to 7) along with Lanthanide series and Actinide series. The period number indicates the number of shells around the nucleus, which decide the size of atom an hence the physical properties of the elements. The elements of the same period have almost same physical properties!

11 Details of the periodic table

12 Periodic Law When elements are arranged in order of increasing atomic number, there is a periodic pattern in their physical and chemical properties.

13 Alkali Metals

14 Alkaline Earth Metals

15 Transition Metals

16 Halogens

17 Noble gases
