Its name comes from the rocky massif which blue color is due to the specific moss that covers the rocks. Depending on the weather and the season it looks different – blue, green or grey. The geographic lay of the area is varied. The “ Blue Stones” National park is situated near Sliven.

The place of the modern town has been inhabited for thousands of years. The Golden mask and the Golden ring – the seal of King Theres, who lived around 400 B.C. There are archeological finds from the times of Romans,Thracians, and Hellenes.

An interesting sightseeing place are the excavations in the area called Hisarluka where the ruins of the ancient village Twida can be seen.

The population of the Sliven Region is characterized with a large ethnical variety – here live together in harmony four of the basic ethnical groups,typical for Bulgaria. They are : Bulgarians, Turks, Karakachanians and Gypsies.
