Chapter 15 Section 1.5
2
Mechanical Energy Mechanical energy is energy associated with the POSTION and MOTION. Mechanical energy is a COMBINATION of the objects potential and kinetic energy. Mechanical energy = potential energy + kinetic energy See pg. 448
4
Other Forms of Energy Forms of energy associated with the PARTICLES of objects. Too small to see
5
Thermal Energy Thermal energy is the total potential and kinetic energy of the PARTICLES in an object. Lava Ice cream
7
Electrical Energy Electrical energy is the energy of electric charges. Lightning Batteries Electrical lines
8
Chemical Energy Chemical energy is the potential energy stored in the chemical bonds that hold chemical compounds together. Food Matches Cells of your body
9
Nuclear Energy Nuclear energy is potential energy stored in the nucleus of an atom and is released in a nuclear reaction. Nuclear fission – when a nucleus splits used by nuclear power plants to produce electricity. Nuclear fusion – when nuclei of atoms fuse or join together. Occur continuously in the sun, releasing tremendous amounts of energy.

Electromagnetic Energy Travels in waves Have some electrical properties and some magnetic properties. Sunlight is a form of this wave. Microwaves, ultraviolet radiation, infrared radiation, and radio waves are also examples.
