What is an Atomic Bomb? IIt is a weapon in which an enormous amount of energy is released through nuclear fission or fusion. TThey are very dangerous!! AAtomic explosions can be made through fission and fusion of Uranium-235. Take a guess! Discuss it with a friend.
4
Atomic bombs become famous During World War II, Hitler was developing a plan to create the atomic bomb. A Jewish scientist was afraid what Hitler might do when he had the atomic bomb, so he wrote President Roosevelt convincing him to try and beat Germany to the first atomic bomb. In 1942, Roosevelt gave the ok for scientists to start the “Manhattan Project”, the search for the atomic bomb in science. Albert Einstein even signed the letter to Roosevelt! Even after Germany had given up, America pursued on. After the first test, the scientists realized just how much power they were working with was far more than they had originally imagined. 1 5 4 3 2

Atomic History Con’t. After Hitler’s suicide, the scientists were sure that such a weapon was no longer necessary. The scientists wrote a strong petition to the US government expressing their opinion. 7 6 He then gave the order for the bomb to be dropped. Unfortunately, President Truman ignored their request and insisted that their work had not gone to waste. 9 8
6
How are atomic bombs made? (Fusion) Step 1 Isotopes of hydrogen are smashed together at high pressures. Step 2 This creates helium, and releases a LOT of energy. Step 3 The energy can be used for weaponry.
7
How are atomic bombs made? (Fission) Step 1 1 neutron splits an atom. Step 2 After it’s split, another neutron is released. Step 3 Then that neutron splits another, until all the atoms are split.

Fusion Movie!! Nuclear Fusion can also be found in the sun!!

So why do I care? Atoms, which are so unbelievably small that they needed a new measurement to express their size, are able to create a weapon that can cause: To learn move about the effects of atomic bombs, visit: http://library.thinkquest.org/26742/nuclear.html Blast waves Residual nuclear radiation Initial nuclear radiation Thermal Radiation
11
Are atomic bombs dangerous/illegal? The American government has a special license to use nuclear bombs. The radioactive materials needed to build an atomic bomb are illegal to obtain, so building one is as well. Also, by having an atomic bomb, you can hurt others. So yes, it’s pretty much illegal.
12
What are they used for? Atomic bombs are used simply for weaponry and war means. However, some are built completely for study.
