1 Open Books Literacy Mentor Training

2 Pages & Chapters Organization founded in 2011 with the mission of promoting literacy among families Support parent-teacher partnerships, student- parent relationships, and offer resources Literacy mentors play a support role among teachers, family members, and students. – By participating in the activities with students, literacy mentors set an example for family members so that engaged learning may continue.

3 Open Books Family literacy workshops offered to kindergarten-5th grade students and their parents/guardians in Title 1 schools Each workshop incorporates a different component of literacy, working to strengthen overall reading levels and skillsets Students may start at below grade level with activities, but often progress, reach grade level by year’s end – Sessions build upon one another Families receive a book at every session.

8 Comprehension Reading a short passage aloud, at grade level, and then answering a series of multiple-choice questions to assess information retained From the curriculum: Comprehension skills include – Identifying cause and effect – Comparing and contrasting – Sequencing story events – Identifying main ideas/supporting details – Understanding characters and setting

10 Let’s Practice Partner up with a fellow literacy mentor or a Pages & Chapters board member. One of you will play the role of the student, while the other is the mentor. Practice the third grade level of the Fluency component of literacy (1st lesson). Remember to use the Student Tracking Sheet to monitor progress made.
