Common Core Learning Standards Math

What is “Common Core”? Common Core refers to a new curriculum that will implemented in grades PK – 12 (starting with PK – 8 this year) There will be fewer topics in each grade level which gives us more time to teach for understanding There will be a balance among fluency (speed and accuracy such as math facts) and understanding (rather than “tricks”, students will need to know “why”)
3
How will this look different? Understanding takes more time and effort for students. Students will be “talking math” more and be expected to participate more actively in their math class. Methods of solving problems may look different. Again, more emphasis will be given to understanding what they are learning rather than memorizing rules and tricks.
4
Multiple approaches to solving problems will be emphasized and encouraged There is also more of an emphasis on the application of what they are learning (using math to solve real life problems).
5
How can I help my student? Practice math facts at home to increase speed and accuracy Be sure your child is doing their homework – practice is very important Contact your child’s math teacher if you have concerns about your child’s progress in math Involve them in real life math (for example estimating at the grocery store)
