Basketry Chumash Indians tied some of their baskets tight anough to hold water. Chumash made black paint for their baskets by burying them in dark mud, or by soaking them in water, acorns, and iron. Chumash baskets had many designed including zigzags and step lined. Chumash named their basket designs. The names include little deer and butterfly buterfly

Shelter Chumash houses were made out of willow poles. A sweathouse is basicaly a bathtub. It is a house that is half underground, used to clean bodies and mostly used by men. A Chumash house and basket are related because they make the houses in the shape of an upsidedown basket.

Shelter A Chumash house had a hole in the top for a fire and when it rained they would cover the hole and their door with animal skin. At night the Chumash families would sit around the fire in their house and tell stories. A Chumash house had 2 or 3 families living in a small house and 7 families living in a big house. The children slept on the floor on bunny fur and adults slept on special benches on sides.
