Facts About Alcohol It is a Depressant that is made synthetically or by natural fermentation that contains ethanol-the type of alcohol found in alcoholic beverages.

Fermentation is the chemical action of yeast on sugars. Fruits, vegetables or grains are generally used in this process. Water, flavoring and minerals can be added to make different beverages.

Intoxication: Is physical and mental impairment resulting from the use of alcohol. Impairments can range from slow reactions, difficulty walking, unconsciousness to death.

Why Young People Drink? 1.To fit in--To be part of a group 2.Boredom 3.To do something they’re not supposed to do. 4.Excitement 5.Peer Pressure 6.Feeling sad or lonely 7.Problems at home or with friends 8.Deal with stress or to relax

Factors effecting teen use of Alcohol 1. Friends and group acceptance 2.Family: if an family members have a history of Alcohol use or abuse 3. Advertising: over $1 billion dollars are spent promoting alcoholic beverages. 4.By 15 years of age children have seen more ads for alcohol products than anything else.

Alcohol & unsafe Situations Alcohol related motor vehicle accidents are the #1 cause of death/disability for teens. Teens who drink are more likely to be victims and/or perpetrators of violent crimes such as: Rape, Assault, Robbery, Fights

Alcohol & Sex Teens who use are more likely to become sexually active at an earlier age do to lowered Inhibitions, poor judgment, and compromising morals. They tend to have: Unprotected sex Increased risks of STI’s Greater chance of becoming pregnant

Being Alcohol Free Avoiding Alcohol: Helps maintain a healthy body Lets you make responsible decisions Avoid risky behaviors Avoid Illegal activities

Strategies for preventing alcohol use Say NO Leave the situation Be assertive: refuse to drink Avoid places where alcohol will be served

Discussion topics 1. What might be the cause for the rise in alcohol consumption among teens and adults? 2. Often someone who is drinking at a party will try to get others to drink. Why is this? 3. Many people do not see Alcohol as a drug, Why is this?
