Lesson Objectives Students will be able to learn to strive for excellence; gives best effort demonstrate initiative and self-discipline know standards of quality and take pride in work set personal goals and assesses progress persevere in the face of difficulties

Performance Character Performance character is a mastery orientation. It consists of some of these character strengths: Diligence Strong work ethics A positive attitude Perseverance Ingenuity Self-discipline Performance character is needed to realize one’s potential for excellence in school, the work place or any other area of endeavour.

Performance Character determines what we do with our natural ability Research on talent development in teens finds that adolescents who are more successful than equally gifted peers in developing their natural talent to a high level have a stronger achievement and endurance orientation, better goal-setting skills and work habits.

Importance of having an ambition Adolescents can use their ambition like a compass to help chart a life course and to provide direction for spending their time and energy. Ambitions can increase the chances that adolescents will take schoolwork seriously and view their success as the product of hard work. Ambitions developed during adolescence have lifelong significance.

Study skills Research finds that students who improve their study skills such as preparation for lessons, organising of their work, time management, note-taking, thinking & consolidating of learning for tests show significant improvement in their learning.

Level of Academic Functioning – The Leader to Detractor Scale LevelDescriptions 5 (Leader) Demonstrates personal commitment and mastery, and encourages others by word and deed to do the same. 3 (Participants) Carries out responsibilities in an adequate way, but does not take on a leadership role. 1 (Detractor) Doesn’t meet the standards personally, and detracts from others meeting the standards.

Level 5 for Attendance, Preparedness & Attitude Always prepared for lessons; functions with intensity and stamina; advances the goals of the class through personal contributions assisting others in these areas.

Level 5 for Healthy Habits of Learning Demonstrates exemplary habits in organizing his work, exemplary time managements skills; note-taking skills; actively assists others in these areas.

Level 5 for Demonstration of Learning Demonstrates mastery of course requirements at highest level including ease and flexibility of using expected learner outcomes; assists others in these areas.

Level 5 for Intellectual Work ethics Demonstrate strong persistence, dedication, curiosity, and enthusiasm for individual academic pursuits; encourage the development of these qualities in others.

Level 5 for Role in Group Work Demonstrates teamwork, initiative and willingness to work with others; Demonstrates the ability to organize and lead group towards stated goals; Encourages team work and leadership in others.

The Contract for Increasing Commitment Aims to guide students to reflect on personal habits and set personal goals, thereby work towards self-improvement. The contract is to be submitted to FT for use during chit- chat session, and will be returned to students after the chit- chat session.
