8 th grade M&M Scientific Method Review using M & M’s Please copy down the following definitions quickly so you can get onto deciding your question and solving that question.
2
Hypothesis: Educated guess What you think the answer may be to your queston/problem at hand. What could my answer be?
3
Data Collection: Writing down my observations from my experiment—that becomes my data. I then analyze the written down observations and any “table” data that helps me arrive at my conclusion.
4
Multiple Trials: Doing things more than once to be sure that the information is correct.
5
Variance: how far a set of numbers are spread out..
6
Average (AKA Mean) the sum of all listed numbers which are then divided by that number of numbers!!
7
Median: is the “middle” of a sorted list of numbers. The median is also the number that is halfway into the set. To find the median, the data should first be arranged in order from least to greatest. To remember the definition of a median, just think of the median of a road, which is the middlemost part of the road.
8
Mode: the number that occurs most often in a set of numbers.
9
Histogram: A graphical representation of the distribution of numerical data.
10
Pie Chart: a type of graph in which a circle is divided into sections that each represent a part of the whole (100%)
11
Inference: a conclusion reached on the basis of evidence (or prior experience) and reasoning.
12
Time for Work. Get a partner---groups of 2 please. Follow your instructions. Must be done today. Must have your paperwork all done also. Easy simple review of scientific method again. No eating M & M’s until all data is collected.
13
Graphing your results Your graph will be a line graph. Each color/amount of the M & M’s should be in color. You can put the total of all M & M’s at the beginning or end of your line graph. ON the back of your line graph, you will make the pie graph showing the % of the whole number of M & M’s. Color each pie section and list the percentage of the M & M’s inside the piece of the pie. Hand in when you are done.
