Factors of Resource Distribution 1. What are two differences between developed and developing countries? 2. What is the relationship between the number of resources a country has and its wealth? 3. Yemen is a country that has few resources, including oil, coal, and trees. Explain why this might cause Yemen to have a high unemployment rate, and low literacy rate.

Objectives By the end of today, all SWBAT…  Identify and describe the 4 factors that impact resource distribution:  Climate  Geography  Politics  Wealth

Review: Answer #1 of your classwork

Key Point #1: Four major factors determine resource distribution:  Climate  Geography  Politics  Wealth

 Climate = long-term temperature and precipitation patterns  Resources: determines the types of plants and animals that live in an area  Many resources in wet and warm areas 1. Climate

World’s Forest Distribution

 Geography = Proximity to oceans, deserts, mountains, etc.  Resources: Oil, coal, diamonds, iron ore 2. Geography

World Coal Distribution

Iron Ore Resources  The darker the red the more resources are extracted

Complete 2A and 2B of your classwork sheet

Star Power

 Each of you will RANDOMLY receive a colored piece of paper  When I say go,  Get up and move to another side of the room  Say something to a classmate  Trade colored pieces of paper with them  Go up to a new classmate

Star Power Big Ideas  Resource distribution, like which color paper you got, is RANDOM  Geography  Climate  The poor, like the orange, lack the power to change their values  Literacy  $$$$  The blue, while not evil, are not willing to give up their power

 Politics = how countries run their governments  Politics continues unequal resource distribution  Developed countries take over developing countries for their resources  Creates instability in developing countries 3. Politics

Colonization in Africa  Note: the gray portion is the ONLY part of Africa that was ruled by Africans

Ex: Instability in Rwanda  Developed countries (first world) strengthened divisions between people in developing (third world countries)  Created slaves  Rumors

 Those with $$$$ are able to continue to hold on to more resources  Wealth continues UNEQUAL resource distribution  Rich countries buy resources from developing countries Think about the BLUES versus the ORANGES earlier today 4. Wealth

Classwork: Wealth  Read the article in Box C and D  Complete Box C and D of classwork in complete sentences

Ex: Oil in Africa

So, what’s the result????

Countries with few resources have a growing number of problems Civil War over Resources Poor education Health problems Pollution

Homework 1.4 Homework

Conclusion  Key Point #1: Four major factors determine resource distribution:  Climate determines living resources  Geography determines non-living resources  Politics continues inequality (colonization)  Wealth continues inequality (unfair trade)

Exit Questions 1. What are the four factors that determine resource distribution? 2. What is climate? 3. What is one resource determined by climate? 4. What is one resource determined by geography? 5. How do politics determine resource distribution? 6. How do wealth determine resource distribution?
