In Review... What’s New about MAFS? As compared to CCSSM? Amended, Deleted, and Added Standards Cognitive Complexity of the Content Standards did NOT change Standards for Mathematical Practices (MP) remain for all grades. Literacy embedded across ALL CONTENT AREAS
4
MAFS ~ Instructional Shifts Shift in Fundamental Purpose From a focus on teaching...to a focus on learning... From emphasis on what was taught...to a fixation on what students learned From coverage of content...to demonstration of proficiency Shift in Assessment From infrequent summative assessments... to frequent common formative assessments From assessments to determine which failed to learn by the deadline... To assessments to identify students who need additional time and support From assessing many things infrequently... To assessing a few things frequently From focusing on average scores...To monitoring each students proficiency
5
Shift in Teaching Practices and School Culture From private practice...to open sharing practice From “these are my kids, those are your kids”... to “these are our kids” From each teacher assigning priority to different learning standards to collaborating teams establishing the priority of standards *DuFour, DuFour, Eaker, and Many, 2010 *Learning by Doing: A Handbook for Professional Learning Communities at Work MAFS ~ Instructional Shifts
