6 V. Domestic Violence The use of force to control and maintain power over a spouse

7 VI. Cycle of Abuse 1. Tension Building Phase: arguments, insults, accusations, threats. 2. Violent Episode Phase: pushing, hitting, choking, weapons. 3. Honeymoon Phase: apologies, reconciliation, promises

8 VII. Elder Abuse Fraud, physical abuse, emotional abuse, or neglect of a senior citizen.

9 VIII. Hazing Harassing newcomers into a group in an abusive, humiliating manner.

10 IX. Effects of Abuse Physical signs Depression Low self-esteem Eating disorders Low energy or fatigue Poor concentration Difficulty making decisions Difficulty sleeping Feelings of worthlessness Guilt Shame Anxiety

11 X. Protecting yourself from abuse Create a supporting network of friends and family. Avoid disrespectful people. Be assertive. Show disapproval to abusive behaviors.

12 XI. Help for the abused. Tell someone. Go somewhere safe. Consider counseling.
