In 1861 America divided NORTH and SOUTH. The Northern States wanted the abolition of slavery and were accepting runaway slaves from the South and making them free. The North was richer than the South, they depended upon the plantations and in turn slaves to run them. In 1860 Lincoln was elected President of America, he wanted to end slavery in the country. The South did not want to be told what they could and could not do. They felt that their slaves were in some cases treated better than the workers in northern factories. South Carolina decided to break away from the United States of America and form their own union run separately from the north, this was called the CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA. The North and the President could not allow this split dividing the country and so civil war broke out.

Many Black Americans were pleased the Civil War had broke out, they felt the issue of slavery was once and for all being dealt with. BUT It was not that simple, even though the North did not agree with Slavery many of them did not trust the Black Americans to fight safely alongside them. This meant that Black Americans were NOT recruited into the army until 1863. Even then they were forced to serve in separate units and sometimes not allowed to see combat at all but forced to serve as cooks and medical help. It was not until 1948 that Black Americans were fully integrated into the US army.
