4 4 Some Pointers Be aware of your boundaries/staying to role Are you getting drawn into something? Unsure? Ask. “I am not the best person to help”

5 Do you know what to do? A mentee phones you at 3am. A mentee wants to see your course work from the 1 st year. You meet your mentee in a bar; after a while this seems to be turning into a serious drinking session. You meet up and s/he is clearly upset and a bit withdrawn. 5

7 Can you look after yourself? On an airplane they always say put on your own oxygen mask before helping others. Who will support your mentoring? Check who you should be in touch with. Keep a balance in your life See balancing the pressures on Moodle, or other stress and well-being resources on Counselling web pages Reflect and work with awareness as you are encouraged to do on your university course. 7

11 11 How to Refer Once given the information about the Counselling Service, students need to take responsibility & contact the Counselling Service themselves Students can telephone/come to reception to book an appointment or come to ‘Open Door’ Very occasionally it can be helpful to assist students further eg make the call with them there

12 12 Who Not to Refer Students who: Don’t want to see a counsellor Need an emergency referral e.g to A&E Are looking only for validation of exceptional factors of a non-confidential nature Need practical advice or information eg financial advice
