Finding Poetry in History

Your task will be to: Read and analyze an historical document for understanding and retell the same story in poetic form. Focus on the underlying issues of the source, then create a found poem that discusses the same issue but as it relates to today's world. Focus on descriptive techniques by selecting words that bring vivid images to mind. Select words and phrases that contain poetic effects such as alliteration, assonance, consonance. Select words and phrases and use them creatively in any way that moves you. Source: Library of Congress

AND you will need to: Illustrate your poem using one of the Library of Congress historical images. Select an image to accompany your poem that offers the audience an enhanced reading experience. Type and print your poem using the online template. (You should first create the poem in a word document, then copy and paste.)

The Process: Go to http://www.loc.gov/teachers/history/create/ http://www.loc.gov/teachers/history/create/ Select a gallery. Select an image. Select one or more documents (below the images). Print the document(s). Use this document(s) to create your FOUND POEM by selecting words, phrases, lines, and sentences and combining them into a poem.

Publish your poem: Under your image, click on “SELECT.” You will be taken to an online form where you will enter your name, school, and paste your poem from your word document. Select “PREVIEW” where you can either edit or PRINT the poem with the illustration.
