2 D. Beecroft Fremont High School 2009-2010 Network  A group of two or more computers, software, and other devices that are connected by means of one or more communications media.

Beecroft Fremont High School 2009-2010 Network Terms  File Server A computer and its associated storage devices that are accessed remotely over a network by users.  Host Computer Main or controlling computer connected to other computers or terminals to which it provides data or computing services via a network. Used more commonly with the Internet

Beecroft Fremont High School 2009-2010 Network Terms (continued)  Workstation Refers to a computer (and often the surrounding area) that has been configured to perform a certain set of tasks, such as photo editing, audio recording, or video production.  Client Network architecture in which a computer (client) is used to send information or a request to another computer (server).

Beecroft Fremont High School 2009-2010 Network Connections Devices  Modem A hardware device that translates signals from digital to analog and from analog to digital; making it possible for digital computers to communicate over analog telephone lines  Hub An electronic device used in a local area network that links groups of computers to one another and allows computers to communicate with one another.

6 Network Connections Devices, Continued  Routers An electronic device typically used in large networks, including the Internet, to assure that messages are sent to their intended destinations.  Gateway Hardware and/or software that allows communication between dissimilar networks.  All of these can be used alone or in a combination D. 9 D. Beecroft Fremont High School 2009-2010 IP (Internet Protocol) Address  It provides a standard set of rules for sending and receiving data through the Internet.
