2 WHAT ARE MODALS? Special helping verbs used with other verbs to express things that have not actually happened. Example: I must complete my homework tonight.

3 What is the verb in the sentence? complete The verb is complete. The word must is a modal, it is used to modify or give more information about the main verb.

4 Modals are also know as auxiliary verbs and are used to show : Possibility – I might be able to join you for lunch. Ability - She can do a backflip. Necessity - You must pay the water bill today.

5 Modals are also used to ask for permission Example: May I please use the bathroom? OR Offer a suggestion Example: You should eat more vegetables.

6 Some Common Modals are: Can/Could Shall/Should Will/Would Must
