2 Role of the Citizens’ Assembly Integral part of the Strategic Clinical Network & Clinical Senate providing a strong Citizen Voice Citizens Assembly members use Healthwatch networks to engage & seek views on questions before they go to Senate Council meetings for deliberation Members will Submit evidence to Senate Council Meetings Members will also share the advice that comes from the Senate Council 4 nominated Senate Council Members ensure that the patient and public perspective is considered at Senate Council meetings

3 AN EXAMPLE: EMERGENCY SURGICAL SERVICES IN THE SOUTH WEST RESPONSES FROM THE CITIZENS’ ASSEMBLY

4 HEADLINES 102 RESPONSES (Survey Monkey 80%, Face to Face 20%, plus Citizens’ Assembly discussion) More people satisfied than dissatisfied with service received (50% cf 30%) Over half did not have surgery explained Large majority (77%) want treatment at nearest local hospital Patient, family & medical team to work together to make decisions

5 KEY MESSAGES (1) A good service is one which: - Has good access to consultants/specialists and well-trained staff, providing ‘first class’ medical treatment - Gives patients and families good information, including risks and benefits of surgery - Delivers a safe, compassionate and prompt service with good outcomes which includes plans for aftercare

6 KEY MESSAGES (2) Develop use of technology to ensure access across the region to top class advice/input to emergency surgery Acknowledge the patient/family ‘voice’ in helping to determine what treatment and aftercare should be delivered

7 My Thoughts on Patient and Public Involvement Patients should be partners in planning for their health – ‘it’s my body’. Patients are not just their disease/illness. Consider social, psychological and practical needs. Involving patients and public helps ensure robust deliberations and decisions.
