What is a RESUME? A brief summary of your: Qualifications Education Training Skills Work Experience Advantage – written prior to applying and interviewing Remember – resume is a living document.

RESUME ESSENTIALS Conduct self-assessment on paper Outline your skills, abilities, work experience and extracurricular activities (once you create this, be sure to save it)

RESUME CONTENT Your resume must contain the below information: NAME – full name (avoid nicknames) ADDRESS – Permanent address (where you receive mail) TELEPHONE – Number where you can be reached the most (can list cell-phone as well) be sure to list area code E-mail Address – choose an e-mail address that sounds professional

OBJECTIVE Purpose To tell potential employers the sort of work you’re hoping to do. 1.Be specific 2.Tailor your objective to each employer you’re targeting 3.Use correct/appropriate grammar 4.Read it aloud before moving on (have someone else read it)

WORK EXPERIENCE Overview of your work history. Title of positions held Name of organization Location of work (town, state) Dates of employment Brief description of work responsibilities – emphasis on specific skills and achievement.

EDUCATION Overview of your academic background. Most recent educational information is listed first Include your degree, major, institution attended, minor/concentration Include your school information, graduation date Include your GPA only if higher than 3.0 List any academic honors/achievements/Awards

INTEREST/HOBBIES Overview of interest/hobbies relevant to job. Key or special skills or competencies Leadership experience Volunteer organizations Participation in school athletics or clubs

REFERENCES List of people willing (able) to verify your resume information. Resume should only contain the following: A simple title:References Upon Request However you will need to have a separate sheet of paper from your resume that contains your references; Names, address, telephone numbers, job title. FYI - Ask a person before listing them as a reference. Be sure the reference information is accurate (current). Always take the reference page with you to any interview

RESUME DESIGN Use white or off-white paper Use 8-1/2 x 11 inch paper (standard size) Print on one side of the paper Use a font of 10 to 14 points Use non-decorative typefaces (script – Arial or TNR) Choose one typeface and stick to it Avoid italics and underlined words Try to keep it 1pg only

RESUME DESIGN continued Do not use horizontal or vertical lines, graphics or shading. Do not fold or staple your resume. If you must mail your resume, put it in a oversize envelope. Utilize Spell/Grammar check. Personally read and have someone else read your resume before submitting it. Contact and give your references a “heads up”.
