4 Overview The FCAT Science tests assess the achievement of the Next Generation Sunshine State Standards in science. Approximately the same number of questions is used for each of the four clusters: Physical and Chemical Sciences, Earth and Space Sciences, Life and Environmental Sciences, and Scientific Thinking. The student will be tested on material from 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grade courses.

5 Overview (cont.) The FCAT Science test for Grade 8 consists of multiple-choice questions and gridded-response questions. The Science FCAT is administered to 8 th grade students in mid-April. The test is 60 questions and the students have 110 minutes to complete it.

6 The student: recognizes the differences between solids, liquids, and gases contrasts physical and chemical changes identifies atomic structures recognizes properties of waves describes how energy flows through a system describes, measures, and predicts the types of motion and effects of force Physical and Chemical Science

7 The student: recognizes that forces within and on Earth result in geologic structures, weather, erosion, and ocean currents explains the relationship between the Sun, Moon, and Earth understands that activities of humans affect ecosystems compares and contrasts characteristics of planets, stars, and satellites Earth and Space Sciences

8 The student: identifies the structure and function of cells compares and contrasts structures and functions of living things understands the importance of genetic diversity recognizes how living things interact with their environment Life and Environmental Sciences

9 The student: uses scientific method and processes to solve problems understands the interdependence of science, technology, and society recognizes that most natural events occur in consistent patterns Scientific Thinking
