English 1—September 10, 2014 Logos—is a rhetorical appeal to reason or logic. Ethos—is rhetorical appeal that focuses on the character or qualifications of the speaker. Pathos—is a rhetorical appeal to the reader’s or listener’s senses or emotions. Bell ringer: You return home late from a friend’s house and your parents confront you. How could you use logos, ethos, and pathos to talk your way out of trouble? Homework: – Study Island homework due Friday at midnight.

English 1--September 15, 2014 Counterclaim: a position taken by someone with an opposing viewpoint. Bell ringer: Why do you think it is necessary to acknowledge the counterclaims in an argument? Homework: – Study Island homework due by Friday at midnight. I am still working on grading the essays. I will (hopefully) hand them back tomorrow.
