S ILKSCREEN P RINTING (Serigraphy)

W HAT IS IT ? Silkscreen printing or serigraphy was developed out of stencil printing It requires a screen of silk or a similar material, stretched on a frame. A stencil is attached to the silk and ink is forced through the stencil with a rubber squeegee. The open parts of the stencil, allow the ink to pass through onto the paper (or fabric) surface below Many colours can be used, but a separate stencil is needed for each one

W HAT IS IT ? Silkscreen printing allows the artist to produce multiples without needing a printing press or an elaborate workshop Silkscreen printing was primarily used for commercial textile printing: clothing and home décor such as pillows, curtains, rugs, etc. In the 1930’s it became popular as a means to make commercial prints in vivid opaque colour Silkscreen printing has been used to document life during the Depression, or used for propaganda purposes by various governments The technique was popularized by Andy Warhol in his multiple portraits of 1960’s celebrities

S UPPLIES NEEDED … Silk screen Squeegee: used to spread the ink across the screen Stencil medium: you will be using freezer paper which has a plastic coating and doesn’t wrinkle X-acto knife and cutting board Sealing tape: masking tape will be used Ink: Acrylic and Water based screenprinting ink

W HAT SHOULD I PRINT ON ? Paper and Fabric can be used Consider different printing surfaces such as fabrics. Paper should be heavier than card stock so it will not warp Acid-free paper will last the longest Consider the tooth, or surface quality of the paper, the smoother the more even the application of ink Fabric : smooth fabric will yield a consistent layer of ink

C LEAN UP REQUIRED … It is very important to wash the squeegee and screen promptly after printing It is crucial to work quickly as the ink will dry and clog the mesh of the screen, this will make it even harder for you to clean it Scrape leftover ink and put it back in the jar Do not leave the screen soaking in water, this causes the wood to crack

Y OUR T ASK … Create a design in the style of Andy Warhol. As subject matter, you may choose: A) a portrait (either you, a friend or someone famous today). B) modern merchandise (something we all know). C) everyday objects Use a digital photo first and simplify on the computer (photoshop or even MS Word can Remember to keep your design fairly simple, focusing on shape, line and colour Decide how many stencils you will need to create your design (also how many colours you’d like to have) You will have to start with the lightest colour first and then print progressively darker colours on top
