C OAL AND P ETROLEUM By: Savannah Dotterman
2
W HAT ARE THEY USED FOR ? In our society coal is normally used as fuel. Petroleum, also known as crude oil, is like coal, mainly used as fuel.
3
W HAT IS THE EFFECT OF THE USE OF THESE RESOURCES ON THE EARTH ? Mining coal releases dust and gas into the air and burning it does too. Petroleum gives off a gas that can harm the environment.
4
W HAT IS THE EFFECT OF THE USE OF THESE RESOURCES ON ORGANISMS ? Coal mining has effects on wildlife because it disturbs their homes. Petroleum can toxicity things resulting in very harmful things for animals.
5
H OW ARE THEY TURNED INTO USEFUL ENERGY ? For coal to be formed into useable energy you have to burn it. Petroleum is burned, and the heat turns huge electromagnetic turbines that create electricity.
6
D ESCRIBE SOME DANGERS USING AND TRANSPORTING THESE RESOURCES. Transporting the coal itself isn't dangerous it’s the coal dust, when it gets damp it becomes highly flammable. Petroleum is really flammable making it dangerous to transport.
7
D ESCRIBE AN ACTUAL INCIDENT THAT CAUSED DAMAGE TO THE ENVIRONMENT AND DISCUSS ITS EFFECTS AND THE CLEANUP EFFORTS A power plant wanted to use coal to help cool there reactors but because the fumes emitted would harm our environment they used sea water instead. With petroleum there have been several major oil spills in the oceans around the world. Such as: Persian Gulf, Kuwait; Bahia del Campeche, Mexico; Fergana Valley, Uzbekistan; etc.
