W HAT WE ARE DOING TODAY … Identify green lights & red lights to your own reading process Identify green lights & red lights to our own text book Identify the text features (how this book is set up)

P REAMBLE ( WARM UP / DO NOW ) Using the document (red lights & green lights) Take 3 mins to make a list of the red lights and green lights of your own reading process Note: Red Lights = things that have made reading difficult Green Lights = things that have made reading easy Take 2 mins total to share with your partner what you wrote- That’s 1 min each Bring this out to the floor…

O UR APPROACH TO THE READING The ultimate goal of this process is to: Get you to read complex texts (of any kind) independently (solo cholo) with the highest level of comprehension But, also want you to read OUR textbook to get you ready for daily reading quizzes, understand the lectures more, AND prepare you for exam To do this, we need to understand TWO things about this process…

T HE R EADING P ROCESS … How we FEEL and what we DO when it comes to reading: i.e. (for example) Confidence Motivation Stamina Disposition towards comprehension What we know how to do (when it comes to reading): i.e. CATCH, TTT, annotation, summary etc Knowledge about topic Critical thinking as you read Different ways to read different texts BehaviorSkills

T HINKING THE P ROCESS T HROUGH Before YOU can start to dive into your textbook to make sense of it I will now walk you through the thought process of taking a look at what your brain should be doing as you examine and analyze Ch 1 today… YOU ARE listening to what I am saying… YOU ARE watching what I am doing… YOU ARE asking yourself if you are doing similar processes in your brain as you read Feel free to take notes, annotate, write on the copy I gave you…

T HE T RAFFIC L IGHTS OF O UR T EXT You are now going to take a step back and take a closer look at our textbook We’re looking at Green Lights first: With a partner take 5 minutes to do the following: ID what in this textbook allows you to understand and comprehend the ideas easily ID at LEAST 5 different examples from the text Bring this out to floor… Note- as we discuss the ideas, you should be keeping track of these so you can come back to them later- i.e. WRITE THESE DOWN

T HE T RAFFIC L IGHTS OF O UR T EXT You are now going ID the challenges of this text We’re looking at Red Lights now: With a partner take 5 minutes to do the following: ID what in this textbook makes it challenging to understand and comprehend the ideas easily ID at LEAST 5 different examples from the text Bring this out to floor… Note- as we discuss the ideas, you should be keeping track of these so you can come back to them later- i.e. WRITE THESE DOWN

T EXT F EATURES Take 2 mins to make a list of all the things you know about how Textbooks are designed… Now, take30 seconds each to share your list… Take 1 min to share what you have similar and what you have that’s different Bring these out to the floor… *Same as before- keep track of these as they come out to the floor So WHAT NOW?...

K NOW IT, LOVE IT, LIVE IT … It’s time to UNPACK our text book… With your partner(s), take 7 mins to ID as many features of the text book as you can For example: 2 nd page has list of sections… *Note- You will be returning to this list next week-keep track of what you’re getting from this work
