2 Chapter 7: Linear Momentum Along with conservation of energy, we will now include other conserved quantities of linear and angular momentum. Linear momentum is defined as the product of an objects mass and velocity. The symbol used for momentum is ‘p’. Since velocity is a vector, momentum is a vector quantity.

3 Newton’s Second law… Newton originally stated his second law in terms of momentum as…  F=  p/  t… …or The rate of change of momentum of a body is equal to the net force applied to it…. …note that this can easily be transformed to F=ma.
