The services and goods of mangrove ecosystems
Supporting services (soil formation, photosynthesis, primary production, nutrient cycling and, water cycling) Provisioning services (are the natural products generated by mangroves, such as wood, habitat for honey collecting, wildlife…) Regulating ecosystem services (such as resilience, pollination, biological control, nutrient cycling, air quality regulation, and maintenance of biodiversity) Regulating services (include water quality maintenance, environmental disturbance prevention (storm, flood and erosion control), and climate regulation Mangrove rehabilitation Weg naar Zee with sediment trapping technique

Mangrove rehabilitation Weg naar Zee with sediment trapping technique
We have seen that mangrove ecosystem, as part of the coastal zone is important because, it offer us: Protection, and therefore security Food supply, and therefore health Mitigation of climate, and therefore the future Employment (fisheries, tourism, among others Land accretion, (additional space for biodiversity, storage of water) Mangrove rehabilitation Weg naar Zee with sediment trapping technique

The implementation General Information of the project:
Project title: Mangrove rehabilitation Weg naar Zee with sediment trapping technique Donor Organization: Conservation International Foundation Suriname. Recipient Organization: Anton de Kom University of Suriname Starting date of the project: April 22, 2015; Termination date: Aug 31, 2015. Effective starting date is July 11, 2015. Grant amount: USD Mangrove rehabilitation Weg naar Zee with sediment trapping technique

Project Objective The main objective of this pilot project is to develop adaptation measures against sea level rise, and hence addressing climate change in a sustainable way. The adaptation measure include e.g. establishing of a sedimentation trapping unit aiming to demonstrate the mitigation of the coastal erosion. Conclusion The process of establishing the STU is very instructive
The Construction of the STU is finished The project is finalized within the given time duration Four students are writing their BSc thesis on different topics of this project Data gathering is started and will be continued Participants, including volunteers have gained in-depth knowledge of the STU and its functioning Several media publications have been issued Mangrove rehabilitation Weg naar Zee with sediment trapping technique
33
Points of improvements
Transportation in the STU; suggestion: to use an airboat (time effective, fast and easy) More people to engage actively; compensation is required Mangrove rehabilitation Weg naar Zee with sediment trapping technique
34
Points of concern Monitoring
Addition of filling material (additional branches, bamboo’s etc.) Life time of such materials The rate of compaction Mangrove rehabilitation Weg naar Zee with sediment trapping technique
