2 Industrial Technologies Program (ITP) Mission Improve national energy security, climate, environment, and economic competitiveness by transforming the way U.S. industry uses energy.
3
3 Trends in Energy Intensity by Sector Index (1980 = 100) * Change in real value-added for industrial sector Sources: EIA, Dept. of Commerce, PNNL Based on primary energy use

8 Why Focus on Information and Communications? Server-based data centers and telecommunications already use 3% of the nation’s electricity. Energy costs exceed the cost of data center IT equipment over its 3-5 year useful life. Data center energy use is increasing by 12% annually. Existing facilities face power and cooling constraints. Broadband is increasing telecom sector energy use. Even with the positive impact of ITP’s Technology Delivery, further advances through R&D are needed to meet national energy goals.
9
9 Tech Delivery: Energy-Efficient Data Centers Released “DC Pro” data center evaluation tool Created training curriculum Performed data center assessments Promote systems approach in design, energy management and operation Raised awareness of energy efficiency opportunities via case studies (Lucas Films and Verizon) Conducted Federal showcases Recognized industry leaders (Uptime awards)
