Observer Scanner Training Navigational Assistance Section 4 by 1st Lt. Alan Fenter
2
Level II Technician Rating Section 1: Introduction/Maps & Charts Objective: Discuss air navigation, the reason the Observer’s role in navigation, and the map information necessary for navigation.
3
Level II Technician Rating Observer’s role During SAR operations, the pilot may not be able to perform all navigational duties.
4
Level II Technician Rating Check for Understanding Define air navigation The process of determining the geographic position and of maintaining the desired direction of an aircraft relative to the surface of the earth.
5
Level II Technician Rating Check for Understanding Why does the observer provide navigational assistance during a search? The pilot is unable to perform all navigational duties and fly precise patterns safely at the same time.
6
Level II Technician Rating Check for Understanding What four types of information does the navigation map provide? 1.Present Position 2.direction and route to travel 3.distance to travel 4.geographic features (man-made & natural)
7
Level II Technician Rating Section 2: Objective: Discuss the various features of a navigation map by matching each feature with the proper characteristic.

Level II Technician Rating Section 3: Map Interpretation Objective: Discuss map interpretation and it’s role in a simulated search situation.
18
Level II Technician Rating Check for Understanding What is as significant in air navigation as interpreting what is seen on the map? Making a comparison outside the airplane.
19
Level II Technician Rating Check for Understanding What are the values of landmarks in a search? Serve as reference points and help in execution of precise search patterns.
20
Level II Technician Rating Check for Understanding What is the purpose of a graphic scale on a map? Provide stature mile measurements.
21
Level II Technician Rating Check for Understanding What must the observer consider when calculating the amount of time to fly from one place to another? General weather conditions
22
Level II Technician Rating Check for Understanding What is the value of studying the navigation map before takeoff? Distinctive features that ensure the course is correct can be easily recalled.
