Key Words Spot Heights: The height of certain points on a map indicated by a one off specific number Above Sea Level (ASL): The distance in which land height is measured, with sea level being zero. Contour lines: Lines on a map that represent a certain height ASL. Lines generally 20 m apart however this is different on each map.

The closer together the lines, the steeper the slope. The further apart the lines, the more gentle the slope.

Cross Sections We can use contour lines to draw a cross section of an area. A cross section is a profile view (side on) of the land to show the shape of the land. Bring contour lines to life, using a piece of paper and a topographic map.
