History of Pompeii Earliest signs of occupation seem to date from 7th/6 th century BCE. Origins may be Latin, Etruscan, or Greek. A flourishing town by late 3 rd century BCE. Loyal to Rome during Hannibal’s invasion. Fought against Rome in the Social Wars 91-88 BCE.

History of Pompeii Became a Roman colony – Colonia Cornelia Veneria Pompeiana. Governed by duumvirs and a town council. Damaged by an earthquake in 62 CE. Rebuilding still in progress when the town was buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE.
