What is an Ethnic Group? A group of people who share language, customs and a common heritage.

What is Race? Race A group of human beings distinguished by physical traits, blood types, genetic code patterns or genetically inherited characteristics.

Ethnocentrism Believing that one’s own culture is best or better than others.

Why people move. Zombie push/pull Zombie push/pull Push – means leaving an area because of what is happening in the area you are leaving. – Ex. Political unrest, no jobs, natural disaster Pull – means leaving an area because of what is happening in the area you are going to. – Ex. Good jobs, stable government, weather

What happens when people move? Do you become like them?? – Assimilation –the minority is absorbed by the majority.

What happens when you move? Do they become a little like you? – Cultural Diffusion – The spread of ideas, innovations or patterns of behavior to different societies.

Innovation Taking existing elements of society and creating something new to meet a need

What happens when you move? Acculturation – Cultural change that occurs when individuals in a society accept or adopt an innovation.

Demography Demography- study of population Census- survey of population, done every 10 years by the federal government

What are Birth Rates? Birth Rate – number of live births per 1000 people Fertility Rate – average number of children a woman will have in her lifetime

What are Death Rates? Death (Mortality) Rate – number of deaths per 1000 people Infant Mortality Rate – number of deaths among infants under 1 year old, per 1000 live births

What is Rate of Natural Increase? Rate of Natural Increase- % a population grows in one year Birth Rate minus Death Rate = Rate of Natural Increase

Making Predictions Look at the shape of these charts, and think about them. Then try to answer these questions on a separate paper. Which has a higher % of children? Which is most wealthy, most poor? Which has the most unemployed? Which probably has best health care? Which has most not going to school?
