C-FOS EXPRESION IN RATS with HYPOGLYCEMIA BY ALEJANDRO G.B C-FOS EXPRESION IN RATS with HYPOGLYCEMIA BY ALEJANDRO G.B

Hypoglycemia means low blood sugar. Diagnosis of hypoglycemia can be made when symptoms of hypoglycemia occur together with a documented blood glucose under 45 mg/dl and these symptoms promptly resolve with the administration of glucose. Hypoglycemia is only significant when it is associated with symptoms. HYPOGLYCEMIA

Hupoglycemia can cause mental confusion.. Antagonistic behavior. Unconsciousness. And seizures HYPOGLYCEMIC Symptoms

Hypoglycemia causes Hypoglycemia is usually unpleasant, the most common reason for hypoglycemia is too much insulin, too little food, or too much activity. Another cause is drinking alcoholic beverages.
5
To determine brain structures involved in the hypoglycemic symptoms, the imaging of brain activation during hypoglycemia can be used. Since is difficult to study hypoglycemia independently in humans, we develop a model of hypoglycemia in rats after insulin administration. Experiments were performed on Sprague- Dawley rats allowed free access to food and water. Insulin (30 IU/kg) is administered intraperitoneally. After three hours, the brains are removed and processed immunohistochemically for an early gene c-fos (activation marker). METHODS

MY WORK IN THE SUMMER What I will been doing in the summer will be finding out which brain structures are active during severe hypoglycemia in lab rats.
