Liquid Volume Measurement Tools & Methods

Meniscus Water is adhesive… sticks to stuff. It “climbs” the glass. The curve formed is the meniscus. We Read the BOTTOM of the curve! Note that this cylinder is NOT graduated. Could we measure with it?

Liquid Measurement Tools Beaker: Mixing, Boiling, Storing

Liquid Measurement Tools Erlenmyer Flask: Mixing, Storing, Boiling

Liquid Measurement Tools Graduated Cylinder: Measuring

Liquid Measurement Tools Medicine Droppers Pipets… Accurately measure small volumes.

Steps –Determine the scale. –Set sample on flat surface. –Get down to eye-level. –Read bottom of the curve. –Estimate the last digit. –Include the proper units.

Determine Scale What is this a picture of? A 400 mL Beaker What is the scale? 25 mL

Determine Scale What is this? A 25 mL graduated cylinder. What is the scale? 0.2 mL What is the volume of water in this cylinder? 20.60 mL

Determine Scale What is this? A 500 mL Erlenmyer Flask. What is the scale? 100 mL

Liquid Volume Lab Practice 1.Line up 6 different measuring tools. 1.They are a. b. c. d. e. f. 2.Put a random amount of water in each. 3.On your paper, write: 1.Name of tool. 2.Scale 3.Amount of water in it. 4.Call Mr. Frost over to check.
