The 100 Million Reasons Why International Adoption Should Be Supported Vanya Wetherington Hosted 2007

The 100 Million Reasons Why International Adoption Should Be Supported According to UNICEF there are over 100 million orphans worldwide. In comparison, the United States’ population is just over 300 million. Most statistics gathered from adoption agencies are astounding. There are 8 million children institutionalized. Every day 5,760 more children become orphans, and only 250,000 are adopted annually. Every 2.2 seconds another orphan ages out of the system and has no family and no place to call home. The question is why are more children not adopted?

The 100 Million Reasons Why International Adoption Should Be Supported The children do not understand why no one wants them. I know this because I was in an orphanage in Zelengoski, Russia, in 2007 when my parents hosted me for the summer. I had lived in the orphanage for five years after both of my biological parents passed. I waited along with over hundred other children hoping that one day a family would come for me and they did. I was underweight for my age, spoke no English and was probably behind in school, but this year I graduate from high school with excellent grades, a loving family. I have recently been accepted into the University of Mississippi’s Computer Science program. There are children like me who need a home to thrive and who will not be a statistic. There are a 100 million children waiting like I was and they are the 100 million reasons why international adoption should be endorsed.
