2 George Brooks Veikoso Born and raised in Hawaii
Parents are originally from Fiji so George spent part of his childhood in Fiji Took the name of his parents motherland as his artist name to represent his roots First professional singing appearance earned him $5 at age 8 “The only place I could sing was in church, so every chance I could I’s sneak out…” Later, at age 14, his mother gave in and let him join a Fijian band, Rootstrata A producer, song writer, and singer/performer

3 Career Began performing with groups as a singer before making it big as a solo artist People questioned him for collaborating a lot with other artists He credits 3 relatives for encouraging his interest and passion for music Great uncle, Isireli Racule, who helped make “Drums of the Island” by Elvis Presley. Uncle Sakiusa Bulicokocoko (of Bulicoko Band Fame) Uncle Paul Stevens, who started his interest in artists like Stevie Wonder and Marvine Gaye, groups like Third World, Earth Wind and Fire, Chaka Klan, the Bee Gees and other early inspirations Released 10 albums His songs “Sitt’n on the Dock of the Bay”, “Smokin Session”, and “She’s Da Bomb” from his album Gratitude were heard on the Bay Watch Hawaii and MTV’s Real World Hawaii

4 Awards Began his popularity and presence in the local music industry after receiving awards Hawaii Academy of Record Arts’ Na Hooku Hanohano Award for Male Vocalist of the Year and Entertainer of the Year Public balloting for Favorite Entertainer of the Year in 1998

5 Genre A fusion of Island reggae, hip-hip, R&B, jazz and soul
Mostly known for his reggae style Cultural Origins: Jamaica (especially Kingston), later becoming a part of African music Common to be sung in Jamaican Patois and lyaric dialects Typical Instruments: bass guitar, drums, organ, brass instruments, melodica Bass sound is thick and heavy Concept of “call and response” “Reggae has spread to many countries across the world, often incorporating local instruments and fusing with other genres.”
