WASHINGTON’S FAREWELL ADDRESS WHAT ADVICE WAS HE OFFERING AS HE LEFT OFFICE? “It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world; so far as we are now at liberty to do it; for let me not be understood as capable of patronizing infidelity to existing engagements. I hold the maxim (principle) no less applicable to the public than to private affairs, that honesty is always the best policy. I repeat it, therefore, let those engagements be observed in their genuine sense. But, in my opinion, it is unnecessary and would be unwise to extend them…”

COURT CASES REVISITED Marbury vs. Madison (1803) – Established the Supreme Court’s power to judge the constitutionality of laws-Judicial Review Gibbons vs. Ogden (1824) – The regulation of interstate commerce Worchester vs. Georgia – Heard under Chief Justice John Marshall – Concerned the relationship between the Cherokee people and a state – The Court ordered that Indian nations were subject to federal, not state law.

OTHER NOTES The South thought it would make it more difficult to export crops if Congress enacted high tariffs. Why? During 1800’s – Construction of Canals – Use of steamboats on rivers – Construction of toll roads Many states had put an end to property qualifications which resulted in an increase in voters between the election of 1824 & 1828
