6 Types of Websites Informational Informational website- used to gather information and learn about something BenefitsDrawbacks Resources- find information on just about anything Knowledge- acquire new knowledge easily and quickly Overwhelming variety-hard to sift through data Questionable credibility- all information online isn’t true

7 Types of Websites Corporate and E-Commerce Corporate website- used to convince people to buy something BenefitsDrawbacks Useful information- can help us learn about new products or services Instant Access- we can purchase products online Misleading information- sometimes corporate sites want to fool you into thinking that “experts” like their products Easy purchasing power- these sites make it almost too easy to buy something

8 Benefits of Surfing the Web Easy data comparison- can be quicker than gathering data from traditional print sources Convenient Media Consumption- we can buy or view/listen to movies and music online instead of going to a store for purchase Communication- instant and free- we can use social media sites like Facebook to stay connected with friends and family

9 Drawbacks of Surfing the Web Exposure to inappropriate material - violent content or sites that make you feel uncomfortable Exposure to cyberbullying - victims can suffer from depression, health problems, and failing grades Attack by hackers- people can electronically break into your computer and steal personal information Attack by viruses- malicious software

Search Search engine- a tool used to help find information on websites Keywords - words most relevant to a certain topic Results page- displays all of the related websites you have searched for Efficient search- finding the most relevant and credible information Boolean search- using logical operators to connect keywords And- includes Or- broadens Not- excludes

11 3 Key Factors of Surfing the Web 2. Strategy Search strategies- tactics to ensure to get the best results Research questions- questions you have about a subject Extract keywords- isolating main keywords Use synonyms- use similar words Record results- keep track of keywords you’ve used

Safety Online rules - guidelines to follow for safe surfing Do: talk with a trusted adult first, report unsafe material, report cyberbullying, not trusting everyone online Don’t: give out personal information, share passwords, meet up with an online person, visit risky websites
