An effective thesis does: State an opinion Given insight into argument An effective thesis: Tells us something we don’t already know. Contradicts an existing belief. Offers a solution to an existing problem/issue.

9. + So what’s your paper ‘on’? 1- An aspect of immigration you have seen from your interviews/project to date that you wish to explore in a formal, academic nature. 2- Connection to your group’s immigration/presence in Canada during the 19 th Century and the mutual impact of that presence.
