+ Why. (aka Objectives) To continue developing strong academic research skills. To continue developing formal essay writing skills. To allow students to select a topic of interest to them to investigate in depth.

+ Why. (aka no really, why?) My Goal: To facilitate your ability to better interact with the world around you. This requires: Baseline knowledge Conceptual foundation “Critical thinking” Communication skills

+ Areas of Focus: Thesis, Substantiation, Process An effective thesis is: Clear and concise Written in third person Subject of the essay. An effective thesis does: State an opinion Given insight into argument An effective thesis: Tells us something we don’t already know. Contradicts an existing belief. Offers a solution to an existing problem/issue.

Offers a solution to an existing problem/issue. 1)“Chinese immigration has changed in many ways due to factors in both China and Canada.” 2) “The Chinese Exclusion Act and the xenophobic feelings towards the Chinese in Canada were necessary to/for the proper integration of Chinese culture into the Canadian mosaic.” 3) Canada’s multiculturalistic society is causing the merging, erosion and death of many cultures in its borders.

+ Areas of Focus: Thesis, Substantiation, Process What is the best PROCESS for writing a stellar essay? There is no ONE BEST FIT. It’s what works for you. HOWEVER, if your process does not include: Thinking Planning Substantiation Revision x 3 External editing It is likely a deficient academic process.

+ So what’s your paper ‘on’? 1- An aspect of immigration you have seen from your interviews/project to date that you wish to explore in a formal, academic nature. 2- Connection to your group’s immigration/presence in Canada during the 19 th Century and the mutual impact of that presence.
