3 Cancer Cancer is a group of diseases caused by abnormal cell growth and reproduction. Different kinds of cancer kind affect specific organs ALL forms of cancer involve uncontrolled cell Growth

4 Cancer (Continued) Healthy organisms grow as a result of cell division in a controlled process. Cancer causes a large amount of uncontrolled cell division or abnormal cells Sometimes cells join together to form a large mass known as a Tumor

5 Causes of Cancer There are many causes to cancer. But most are caused by exposure to certain chemicals Ex- Tobacco use causes Lung Cancer A chemical that causes cancer is called a carcinogen

6 Asbestos A carcinogen that was once common in building construction Mineral broke down into particles easily inhaled. Cause lung cancer Mesothelioma

7 Radon Radon is a radioactive gas present in some rocks The gas seeps from the layers of the rock and soil into homes Gas gets in water causes stomach cancer L-Term exposure = Lung cancer
