1  Deadline for extra credit and late work: Fri, Sept 28.  Lord of the Flies exam: Thurs, Sept 27 during class or during lunch on A Days next week.

2  Socratic Seminar: Tues, Sept 25  Beowulf test: Thurs, Sept 27  Second six weeks: Oedipus Rex. A good portion of the play will be read for homework!!!

3  To read a text analytically, describing how language and literary techniques contribute to meaning and theme of specific excerpts in Beowulf.  To draw conclusions about universal themes.

4  Answer question on a specific passage in Beowulf.  Group presentations.  Discuss homework assignment. ****if you were absent today, look at the question. Your section is “The Battle With The Dragon”, beginning on page 38. You can access the instructions for the online textbook from my homepage.

5  While the theme of a novel, poem, play, etc.. Is often expressed as a general statement about life, universal themes are widely held ideas about life.

6  The subject of a work might be love; the theme would be what the writer says about love

7  Looking carefully at your assigned section, analyze the literary/poetic techniques used by the poet to characterize Beowulf, Grendel, Grendel’s mother, the Danes, and the Geats; how does the poet convey meaning and universal theme?

8  Compose three level 2 questions and three level 3 questions from the excerpts we have read from Beowulf. Be ready to turn them in at the beginning of class. These will be topics for our Socratic Seminar.
